Pain Scientist and Methodologist

About me:

Hi! My name is Ian. I’m a clinical epidemiologist and methodologist studying translational pain science. My research aims to develop, evaluate and apply advanced quantitative methods to questions of how best to model pain variability and quality of life in emerging adults. Some other brief notes about me:

  • Pediatric ICU nurse (CT Children’s)
  • PhD candidate (UMass Nursing)
  • Predoctoral diversity fellow (UMass)
  • Co-investigator, Integrative Pediatric Pain Center (CT Children’s)
  • Member, Center for Advancing the Management of Pain (UConn)
  • Affiliate, Munn Institute for Nursing Research (MGH/Harvard)
  • Trainee fellow, Pain in Child Health (PICH)

Primary population:

I am interested in understanding the experiences of adolescents and emerging adults (ages 13-25) with chronic physical or emotional pain who identify as a sexual or gender minority (SGM) – i.e., lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

Emerging evidence shows significant pain disparities for SGM compared to non-SGM people. My goal is to empower young SGM people to identify activating factors and coping mechanisms so they may self-manage their pain across time.

Core interests:

1. Pain measurement and variability

2. Neurobehavioral mechanisms of chronic pain

3. Intersection of emotional and physical pain

4. Pain self-management

Research objectives:

  • Develop and refine instruments to assess pain and quality of life
  • Investigate pain variability using intensive longitudinal methods
  • Meta-analyze omics, neuroimaging and biobehavioral data to explore pain mechanisms
  • Investigate the distribution, determinants and characteristics of chronic pain
  • Explore the intersection of physical and emotional pain
  • Understand the impact of personality processes on self-regulation and pain self-management
  • Explore social and contextual influences on pain variability (e.g., stigma and discrimination)
  • Use community-informed grounded theory and structural equation modeling to develop novel midrange nursing theories of pain self-management in SGM youth
